Hello, my name is Bradley Salter and I have been involved in mental health for 7 years now. I qualified as a mental health nurse in 2005 and worked in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (Greyfriars PICU, 2gether Partnership Trust) before moving into the community as Crisis and Home Treatment Nurse. During this time I have had the opportunity to see first hand the crippling effects of serious mental illness such as Schizophrenia, Bi Polar Effective Disorder and severe depression. I have witnessed the courage of people battling these conditions, but yet also see how stigma, ignorance and fear blights their recovery process.
Stigma in the media, stigma in the workplace, stigma in society - it is not a myth, it is fact. To me it beggar's belief that so many fantastic strides have been made in other socially stigmatized groups such as the gay population, yet you are still more likely to get a job as an ex prisoner than somebody with a diagnosis of mental illness. How can this be so in the 21st century?
I believe mental illness is THE last great taboo and I am inspired by the current Time To Change campaign at http://www.time-to-change.org.uk/. If you are kind enough to make your donation, afterward I urge you to visit this site which is a poignant reminder of how a global change of attitude is desperay needed. I am also an active member of my foundation trust's campaign to combat discrimination and increase awareness of mental health issues. In September, my father and I will be riding to John O'Groats. My chosen charity is MIND http://www.mind.org.uk/ - the leading charity for mental health in and . Please give a little or give a lot. It is money well invested - the odds are 1 in 4 that you know somebody with a mental health problem. That is not a gamble - it is a fact.
