Story
I'm taking part in the Desjardins Charity Challenge to raise funds for The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. My goal is $170: $10 for each kilometre I'll be running on May 24, 2025 at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. **WOW! With generous support, I have updated my goal to $1700**
In 2023, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer after I found a lump during a self exam. The incredible team at the Cancer Centre at The Ottawa Hospital took care of me while I went through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. I took a break from running while undergoing treatment, focusing on other ways to be active.
After 16 rounds of chemotherapy and four weeks of radiation therapy, I finished my active treatment in May 2024 - just in time to take part in the Ottawa 5K at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. While I walked the course in 2024, I'm excited to return to running in 2025 as I tackle the Ottawa 17 km Challenge, taking on the three shortest distances in a single day: the Ottawa 2K, the Ottawa 5K and the Ottawa 10K presented by Otto’s Ottawa. I'm excited to be part of the 2025 Otto's Ottawa Power Crew where I'll be sharing my journey to race day on Instagram @hannahkgm.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers). It is the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer in Canadian women. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 2 in 5 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer.
