Story
We are bowel and anal cancer nurse specialists working at UCLH in London. We look after patients undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and support them through their treatment journey from diagnosis and beyond.
Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK, and the 2nd biggest cancer killer.
1 in 15 men and 1 in 18 women will be diagnosed with bowel cancer during their lifetime. Adults of any age can get bowel cancer. Although it is most common in people over 50 years of age.
When caught early, bowel cancer is very treatable and can be cured with very low risk of returning. Unfortunately, for many patients we look after, the cancer is already advanced by the time of diagnosis, and we can only offer treatment to stabilise or reduce the size of the cancer, rather than cure.
We will be taking part in the Step up for 30 challenge, which is a Bowel Cancer UK campaign. April is also bowel cancer awareness month, and so we will be talking all things poo related throughout the month. All three of us will be taking part in some form of exercise daily throughout April (proof will be sent in the form of sweaty photo’s).
Whilst this is a small gesture, we would love to raise awareness of bowel cancer and show our support to all of our amazing patients who are fighting daily against this cruel condition. This is for you!
