Story
On Sunday 7th March 2010 children from the Kingstanding area will be 'Bouncing for Belarus'. The children are taking part in a Sponsored Bounce to help raise money for the Birmingham Link of the Chernobyl Children's Life Line charity. Each child will bounce on a trampoline as many times as they can in 10 minutes and be sponsored for it.
Jo Harbord and Julie Goody recently won a Birmingham Local Hero award for their commitment to the Birmingham Link of the charity (http://www.birminghammail.net/news/birmingham-news/2009/05/30/kingstanding-sisters-became-birmingham-mail-heroes-after-chernobyl-work-97319-23748234/). The sisters have been 'Host Families' for 10 years now; this will be the 11th year. Being a Host Family involves caring for two children (aged between 8 and 11) for a four week period over Easter - it is completely voluntary! Some children may speak a little English, but the majority don't so it's a challenge BUT a very rewarding challenge...
What they do makes a big difference, especially when it's believed that just four weeks of being out of their homeland can increase the children's life expectancy. Our fresh air and fresh food enables their Thyroid to recover a little. The air and food they eat at home is still contaminated, and will continue to be so, for many thousands of years.
This year the children arrive on 28th March and return home on the 25th April. This year it will cost over £4000 to bring over 8 children and a leader/interpreter. The children do not bring anything with them, the host families provide all their clothes and toiletries.
