We work to build a better world for every child.

Story

Over the next half a year I will be travelling across the globe to raise funds for Unicef, who are the world’s leading organisation for children. Unicef ensures more of the world’s children are vaccinated, educated and protected than any other organisation. We have done more to influence laws and policies to help protect children than anyone else.

I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential – this would not be possible without at least basic access to health, education and a safe environment. This is why I have named Unicef as my chosen charity over the next few months.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

All over the globe, children are experiencing unspeakable violence. Millions are in danger. On city streets, in communities, schools and homes, children are attacked, abused, exploited and killed. From Syria to South Sudan to Yemen, war and conflict put millions of children in terrible danger. They face losing their homes, their families, even their lives.

Today thousands of children will die from diseases that are easy to prevent. Deadly diseases like measles, polio, tetanus, tuberculosis, diphtheria and whooping cough are all easily and cheaply preventable by immunisation. Yet every day, 17,000 children under five die, usually because they don’t get the health care and life-saving vaccines they need.

A child dies every 15 seconds as a result of malnutrition. Millions more live with the lifetime effects – physical disabilities and learning difficulties. When disaster strikes, children are hardest hit. Whether it’s a flood, an earthquake or a hurricane, so many lose everything – their homes, their families, even their lives.

Without your support, Unicef will not be able to continue saving lives and pulling children out of dangerous situations in which they end up, whether through war, disaster, malnutrition or disease. The money and donations you give will help Unicef to carry on with their life-changing work. It doesn’t matter how much you give whether it’s a £10 donation or £100, every single penny helps us to help children.

HOW CAN YOU DONATE?

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DONATIONS?

The donations you give could provide medicine, food, water, education and protection to help make a lasting difference to the lives of children around the world. Here are some of the ways your donation could help:

  • 12p = a vaccination to protect one child from polio.
  • £5 = a snug blanket to keep a baby warm in a hospital, day-care centre or refugee camp.
  • £10 = exercise books, pens, pencils, textbooks and other school things to support the education of a child for a whole year.
  • £19.50 = mosquito nets to protect 7 families from deadly malaria.
  • £106 = a sturdy bike for a child to travel to school so that they don’t miss out on their education.
  • £136 = a school-in-a-box containing school equipment for 40 children to continue their education during an emergency or natural disaster.
  • £257 = water pump to provide clean, safe water to a school or a whole village or community.
  • £1,063 = a temporary school or health centre for children who have survived a natural disaster, war or displacement to have a safe space to learn and play or receive medical care.
