Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Bolton Hospice provides specialist care and support for the people of Bolton who have life-limiting illnesses, and their families. Their team of doctors, nurses and other professional staff provide specialist care and support for local people with cancer both in the hospice and home.
They are an independent charity mainly funded by the people of Bolton and, to continue to provide free care and support, they need to raise £3.8 million a year through donations, fundraising and gifts. With the added complication of COVID 19 they are already half a million pounds behind their target.
And so, in support of this amazing charity, we have decided to donate all funds raised from our annual Charity Day to Bolton Hospice this year.
Background: In May each year, the pupils of Bolton School Junior Boys raise funds for charity by completing the annual ‘Charity Fun Run’. It is one of the highlights of our calendar where all pupils (and some staff) don their fancy dress and run round the athletics track, to raise money for much needed causes.
This year is different in many ways, but we will not let COVID 19 dampen our spirits! We have an alternative plan! We have set ourselves the challenge of following in the footsteps of the great literary character Phileas Fogg. So, running, cycling, walking, skipping and jumping, we plan to try to get round the world in 8 school days, starting this Wednesday 13th May.
If we even vaguely attempted to follow his route the distances are:
Bolton to Cairo - 3755km
Cairo to Mumbai - 4364km
Mumbai to Kolkata - 1665km
Kolkata to Hong Kong - 2655km
Hong Kong to Tokyo - 2881km
Tokyo to San Francisco - 8289km
San Francisco to New York - 4139km
New York to Bolton - 5832km
A total of 29, 825km - which works out at around 135km per child – a tall order, but with the help of parents, brothers and sisters, we hope that a daily 'family workout’ of some description will propel us right around the world!
We plan to use the time previously devoted to the Joe Wicks workout and our virtual sports lessons, along with a few long family walks to achieve this! On Friday 22nd May, which is the scheduled Charity Fun Run day, the boys are going to choose a country around the world and dress up in a manner associated with that country.
During the morning they will be asked to produce a fact-file about their chosen country and prizes will be awarded for the best fact-file and fancy dress. The final 2 lessons of the days will be spent trying to add on as many km as possible in fancy dress. And all this is being done remotely following the COVID19 guidelines!
Message from The Hospice
We are enormously grateful to everyone at Bolton School Junior Boys for your continued support at this very difficult time – thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
Without the support of people like you we wouldn’t be here to care for those most in need, your support means the world to us
Best wishes,
From everyone at Bolton Hospice.
