Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In November 2007 I felt my world had fallen apart as at the age of 43 and quite a healthy, active lady, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Cancer
A word no one wants to hear but millions of people suffer this disease and some don't make it through to the other side.
2007 I had a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and took Tamoxifen for 4 years and had 18 months of monthly Zoladex injections in my ovaries. Side effects of treatments include depression, tiredness, nausea, dry mouth, cough, wheezing, joint pain, forgetfulness, confusion, dizziness, weightgain, headaches, blurred vision, blood clots, heart disease, menopause symptoms. In December 2012 I was given my five year all clear and although I still suffer with some side effects I consider myself to be very lucky to be alive. With the support of family and friends and local support groups I have tried to stay positive throughout my journey and have turned it around in a positive way to show people that there is life after cancer. Since early 2008 I have registered with Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Breast Cancer Care and Breakthrough Generations as an online campaign worker. I have also given some of my spare time to volunteer at a local hospital and at a local Cancer Support Group. I also give free advice and support through my Face Book page to people who's lives are affected by all types of cancer.
Late 2013 I had a further health scare when my consultant feared the Tamoxifen has caused possible womb cancer. Again I felt I was going through another fear, another trauma but carried on a remained positive during several blood tests and examinations. Last week I was given the all clear and my body is cancer-free. I count my blessings everyday and thank god that I am still alive to tell my story to others who may be going through the same disease. This is my 6th Race For Life and I hope to take part in many more. I will be running and walking the 10K with my dog, Molly. I enjoy the annual event which inspires me to stay postive - I see so many brave, positive people on these events and I find it a very uplifting event. I am proud to be taking part in the 2014 event.
I was healthy, active 43 year old, with no family history of the disease and no symptoms apart from one very small lump on the top of my right breast - Cancer does not discriminate it affects the healthiest, fittest of us.
