Story
On Thursday 6 May, Josh collapsed at cricket training whilst doing what he loved (smashing bowlers all around the ground). Sadly, despite the best efforts of his teammates and medical staff, Josh passed away later that evening at just 24 years old.
Josh was not only a truly wonderful cricketer, but he was also an amazing son, brother, boyfriend, friend, colleague and teammate. A standout gentleman that was kind, caring and hardworking with the ability to bring everyone up and along with him. He is and will always be, sadly missed.
Being an active, fit and healthy young man who had never experienced any symptoms, it was shocking to find after his passing that Josh had an undiagnosed heart condition.
This ‘153 challenge’ is dedicated to Josh’s highest score of 153 which he achieved in 2018 whilst playing for Hucknall CC. Members of Birkenhead Park CC and the cricketing community will be individually completing 153km by walking or running throughout July. The challenge will finish on Friday 30 July, which would have been Josh’s 25th birthday.
Each week in the UK at least 12 apparently ‘fit and healthy’ young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. By raising awareness and providing screening opportunities through CRY our aim, in Josh’s name, is to prevent similar tragedies.
CRY aims to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of young people.
