Mum passed away peacefully in February after a long fight with vascular dementia. She was a driven career woman and talented pianist cruelly robbed of her faculties by this withering disease. Dad died 35 years ago but Mum continued to battle on and was a great Nan to my 3 Sons - Adam,Jason and Ryan. For years Mum fought the onset of dementia walking everyday and she moved to live with us when it became too much to live alone. My eternal thanks and admiration has to go to my Wife Michele, who gave Mum a further 5 years of quality of life by living with us until that also became too difficult and Mum had to finally go into a care home for the rest of her time. Living and coping with dementia is the worst thing imaginable, it knows no boundaries in terms of age, intelligence or to some degree lifestyle. To watch a loved-one stripped of their individuality and dignity in front of your eyes and powerless to do anything about it is also unbearable and my heart goes out to anybody that has relatives with this disease. Mum fought to the end -she was hewn out of Tipperary marble and her candle burned brightly for as long as she could.
This run is for you Mum and for all those that have relatives stricken by this disease...........
