Ruth and I are currently in Leeds training to become and Advanced CSE Practitioners. The training has all been rather difficult, but today in particular has been emotionally and mentally challenging.
Today covered online grooming. We had a talk from a Mother, Lorin, whose son Breck was groomed online via gaming rooms. In a nutshell, Lorin recognised something was wrong and went to the police, school and other parents with her concerns. She was ignored each time. The predator gradually manipulated her son via online gaming rooms and tried to turn him against her. Lorin pushed further for police to check out the predator, they failed to do so.
Breck eventually went to meet him, Breck was murdered on this one and only occasion he met him. The predator was an 18 year old male who had previous convictions, if police and professionals checked out the perpetrator and took Lorin’s concerns seriously, there may have been a different outcome.
Through this tragic event, The Breck Foundation was founded. Lorin works to raise awareness of online grooming to prevent this happening again. Obviously, developing tools to raise awareness costs money.
Ruth and I immediately decided we want to help, and thought a great way to start would be by organising a walk up Moel Famau, with our amazing young people and very supportive staff team. Although it would only be a small event, we and our YP’s could all have a go at raising a couple of pounds to donate to the foundation. We could educate the young people on the reason we are doing the walk and therefore raise their awareness of “stranger danger” and e-safety at the same time.
If anyone could sponsor us anything at all it would be greatly appreciated xxxxxx
