Story

My brother, Gideon Williams is suffering from MND, and this is his story:

"I was first diagnosed with MND in Sept 2019. I was a successful Mortgage Broker, not bad at DIY and fairly fit, I took part in a kart race that year and was fastest lap holder and winner of the event. By October 2020 I was so weak that I could not complete a single lap of the same track. Now, in April 2021, I can't dress myself, I need help washing and cannot do anything in the house to help my family. This disease has got to be stopped and a solution is out there, it just needs to be found."

Many moons ago I formed Racing4Charity with sportscar legend David Brabham and we've decided to resurrect the organisation specifically to raise funds for The Motor Neurone Disease Association - in honour of Gideon but also in memory of Neil Cunningham, the late single-seater, sportscar and stunt driver who passed away from MND in 2016.

The Event:

We'll be staging a charity kart endurance race at Thurxton Kart Centre on Thursday 26 August 2021 –  the eve of the bank holiday BTCC race weekend. Around 18 teams of professional racing drivers, mechanics and members of the motorsport industry will battle head-to-head aboard Biz Thunderkarts in the two-hour Karting 4 MND endurance event.

Each team will be paying an entry fee of £400, but we need all the help we can get to raise as much as possible in honour of Gideon and in memory of Neil.

Although we would love to be able to give racing fans the chance to come and watch what is sure to be an epic battle of teams from across the motorsport echelons, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic we will have to evaluate that possibility nearer the time.

A message from MNDA:

Pamela Fry: “Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a fatal, rapidly progressing neurological condition affecting up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. Many people become locked in a failing body unable to move, talk and eventually breathe. MND does not usually affect senses such as sight, hearing and touch. The MND Association focuses on improving access to care research, campaigning for those living with and affected by MND in England, Wales & Northern Ireland. We fund and promote research that leads to new understanding & treatments bringing us ever closer to a cure. Racing4Charity’s help will play a vital role in supporting people living with MND, their families and friends and to bring forward current research projects that may well be able to decrease the symptoms of so many.”
