We support communities in Sri Lanka to offer families a route out of poverty

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our Bike Sri Lanka page.

Please note: Any donation amount is hugely appreciated, £1 buys about 20 pencils or  about 6 exercise books.

We have finished the expedition and the school constuction is complete, but there are many more schools like this in Sri Lanka that need our help so we are still collecting, so please give to help make a positive difference to the new generation of Sri Lankans.

We are a young couple attempting to cycle approximately 1500km around the island of Sri Lanka completely self powered and totally self funded. We begin our journey 9 years to the day after the tragic Boxing Day Tsunami.

The purpose of our expedition is to raise money for the remote Karaveddy Pre School in the Batticaloa region, Eastern Province that desperately needs a rigid watertight roof. Currently they only have a single layer leaky tin roof to keep out the monsoon rain and strong winds. The cost of this is approximatly £1500 ($2500 NZD).

The Batticaloa region has been badly affected by nearly 30 years of civil war, which only recently ended in 2009. When the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami hit, Batticaloa was one of the worst effect areas. The people of the region desperately need our help.

On our journey we will be spending several days in the Karaveddy community to meet the people and witness first hand the progress of the school, helping out where we can.

If we can raise funds in excess of our target we can provide vital teaching supplies to the Karaveddy Pre School and other schools within the Batticaloa region.

The registered charity Ocean Stars Trust will help to distribute the resources from our fundraising in order to ensured the most effective allocation of the money we raise. We chose Ocean Stars because they are a relatively small, non-government organisation who we can communicate with directly and they have a holistic and hands-on approach to helping the Sri Lankan people.

Thank you for your donation!
