Earlier this year, John Stevenson pledged to cycle to the Houses of Parliament from the Carlisle constituency were he to be successful in the forthcoming general election. In May 2010, John was elected as the Member of Parliament for Carlisle and realised that in addition to his new duties as MP he would also need to switch his training regime from running to cycling!
Rather than take the direct route to Westminster, John and his team will be follow 440 miles of Sustrans cycle paths, leaving Carlisle on Thursday 21 October and arriving at the Houses of Parliament on Monday 25 October, averaging just under 90 miles in the saddle each day.
The team has chosen to raise funds for the Eden Valley Hospice, a charity which is close to the hearts of many of the team members. Eden Valley Hospice provides specialised palliative care for terminally ill patients and their families along with a supporting services, free of charge throughout North Cumbria. It also operates a Children's Hospice that cares for life-limited children and their families across Cumbria and the South of Scotland.
