The Charlton Upbeats is a bespoke programme delivered by the Charlton Athletic Community Trust ("CACT") for young people with Down's Syndrome. Launched in 2008 - the Upbeats are funded and run by CACT and the funds raised during the annual 'Upbeats Walk' ensure that The Upbeats programme can continue to run, giving further opportunities to these talented Down's Syndrome footballers. The programme relies solely on individual donors and sponsors.
In June 2016, the Charlton Upbeats won their 4th national title having been successful at the National Down's Syndrome competition held in Birmingham - the annual flagship tournament involving teams from across the country. The team cruised to the title with wins against Cardiff, QPR, Lincoln, Norwich and Moorside before beating Derby County 7-0 in the final - they scored a total of 31 goals and never conceded once during the entire competition!
The event will see a large group of supporters including several ex-CAFC professional players walk 9 miles starting at Charlton’s Sparrows Lane training ground at 9am, trekking through Eltham, Shooters Hill, Greenwich and Charlton to The Valley. During 2016 a total of £37,000 was raised to fund the project and the aim for 2017 is to beat last year's total!
Its a fantastic cause and Bexley Invicta FC are aiming to walk with the Upbeats to help raise contributions towards the project so that these inspiring footballers can continue to receive the equal opportunities they deserve.
