Dear all, as some of you know I have been traveling for the past few months through central/South America. As I arrive at the final part of this trip and reflect on everything I've seen and learned, one thing seems to stand out: how privileged I am. Not only to be on such an eye opening and diverse trip but also to be born in a country full of opportunity and hope, where I have a loving family, a roof over my head and have received a good level of education for free. In every place I've visited there has been overwhelming poverty and inequity, for many it feels inevitable.
I've decided that in order to honour my experience I want to raise money for a charity that is hugely helping women in Peru . In June I will cycle over 1000 miles through France (st malo to nice) independently in order to raise money for Peruvian Hearts, a charity based in Cusco which empowers its girls, bolstering them through education with the hope to eventually stop the cycle of poverty and lack of opportunity for women. On average only 36% of Peruvian girls graduate from secondary school whereas this organisation has a 100% graduation rate and encourages them to continue into further education afterwards. It's already had a vast impact on 40 girls' lives and goes beyond education, helping rebuild and hospitalise inhabitable houses, provide comfortable accommodation, support the families and offer a friendly and understanding community.
I was fortunate enough to visit the organisation and was overwhelmed by the copious optimism and positivity that these women exuded, even though many of them had tragic stories to tell. Despite not seeing their families for months and having to work very hard, having little time for themselves, they all believe wholeheartedly in Peruvian Hearts, knowing that they can help change the destiny of their families and of the women throughout Peru. I also visited some of the girls families who are receiving support and help with construction to make their homes better and the changes were extraordinary. There was more space for the children, secure roofs, toilets, better organisation, redecoration and everyone felt so positive about it! This charity is so unique as it does whatever it can for the girls offering whatever they need in order to blossom and thrive, considering everyone part of the PH family!
Due to the complete emotional and financial support they offer to their girls, it's a fairly rigorous application process to become part of the organisation and all of the girls consider it to have completely changed their lives. My dream is to raise enough funds so that another worthy girl can benefit from this life-changing and transformative opportunity!
As many of us have perhaps taken the opportunity to go to school for granted, I want to give you an opportunity to be part of something very special!
