The Stroke Association holds a very special place in our hearts. Strokes are the fourth biggest killer in the UK, with over 100,000 strokes each year and over 1.2 million stroke survivors.
My mummy had her first stroke in 2005 where she experienced the disabling after effects for 10 years until she had another stroke in 2015 which took her life. The Stroke Association support people and help them rebuild their lives following a stroke both mentally and physically and provide vital funding to aid in research and rehabilitation. From experience I know the facilities, social activities and rehab methods used were fundamental in making a 10 year battle my mum faced a little easier.
I’ll be running the Great North Run with my good friend Beth Allan who has also been affected by this disease and we will be fundraising together.
My Dad suddenly passed away in 2014 after suffering from a stroke which unfortunately was too advanced to save his life. This was the day mine and my families lives changed forever. You never think there is a ‘last’ time that you will get to say ‘goodnight’, ‘love you’, or even kiss and hug them as tight as possible. The Stroke Association is a charity I will be eternally grateful for because although my dad did not have the chance to experience their fantastic rehab facilities, they have provided support and guidance for myself and my family following my Dads death. I will be running the Great North Run alongside Diarmuid in memory of his Mum and my Dad whilst raising awareness for this amazing charity.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
