Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is Beth Walker and nine years ago I had the opportunity to visit Malawi. My experience there changed my entire outlook on life.

Long story short, some incredible people and I were able to set up Hannah's Childrens Home to take in just some of the many homeless children in Blantyre, Malawi. Since then they’ve been forever intertwined in my life. So when they told me they were struggling hugely due to the economic impact of coronavirus I knew I had to do something just mad enough to raise some money. And that’s why, on November 7th, I planned to be walking from Peel Tower in Bury to Blackpool Tower!  Pandemic restrictions prevented this from happening but a new date will be set for May 2021 (weather permitting).

In 2011 I was one of four young people who travelled to Africa to help in Malawi with the work of the charity PFJ. We hadn’t a clue when we set off as to the impact of this adventure.  While we were in Malawi’s southern city of Blantyre we were so moved by the plight of many homeless children on the streets that we were compelled to react.  Fellow adventurer, Hannah, figured that by pooling the finances that we had with us we would be able to establish a home for five orphaned children in partnership with a local church. The church appointed a couple as house parents. This meant that these orphans now have a family and Hannah’s Children’s Home was born.  On our return to the UK we told their story to many people. One of my fellow travellers was a student at Bury Church of England High School.  When the school heard about this they rose to the challenge and raised funds to take in another five children.  School has continued with regular fundraising activities for the support of the home.  Since then a house has been donated to provide a permanent home for the children.  Many people have raised money to support this endeavour and the children have grown and flourished in this family atmosphere.  Their lives have been transformed.

COVID-19 has meant we are all facing challenges but none more so than children in Malawi. The local economy is collapsing and, unlike the UK, there is no government support scheme. Also, the usual areas of support within the local community have been reduced.  The situation is continuing to worsen and this is putting the finances of the home under extreme pressure.  At the same time the situation here in the UK has not helped with the cancellation of many charity fundraising events and opportunities.  The schools have been closed and the usual income streams, from cake sales, sponsored leg waxing and other student events have dried up.  I am asking for your help to address the immediate impact of this challenging situation by sponsoring my personal challenge.

Whatever you give will go solely to support these children and provide for their basic needs at this time. On top of that I can apply to my employer, Rentokil, to match the donations, doubling the money you donate.  For which I am very grateful.

If you are a UK tax payer please remember to tick the Gift Aid box as this means that the UK Government will contribute an additional 25% on every eligible donation.

Please help us to help them. thank you so much in advance for your valued support.
