Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Our beautiful Beth took her own life on 7th March 2016 and we now find life such a struggle.
Beth was the happiest of babies. She would wake at 1 a.m. singing not crying and would sing for hours. She was the most gorgeous little
girl, intelligent, kind, loving and giving, incredibly musical and adored
animals especially dogs. She and our dog Belle were inseparable.
Beth developed into a quirky, beautiful teenager but she had her demons which made life very challenging. She excelled at school and could have done anything she chose in life but despite being a wonderful teacher of maths and English, organising a band, Catcher, which went on to play at Guilfest and Wireless among other things Beth didn’t see any worth in herself.
After two gap years during which she tutored children and travelled extensively in her beloved USA where she made so many friends, Beth finally decided to go to University to study Maths. She seemed to flourish and enjoy life but she was doing her usual – hiding the
real Beth and looking the life and soul of the party. Underneath she was suffering with terrible depression and anxiety. Despite her demons and feeling bad inside Beth was always able to reach out to others and do whatever it took to help them back to a happier life. We have been told by a number of people how they were struggling and how Beth was with them constantly either in person or through texts, calls... until they made it through their problems. But Beth couldn’t accept help herself. She couldn’t see that everyone needs help at all stages of life.
Depression is a disease that needs to be researched more and talked about more and this is one of the reasons we have chosen to support Papyrus. This terrible condition which causes sadness, loss of interest in everything, worthlessness and changes how you think and feel, needs to be acknowledged for what it is. We need to lobby for better Mental Health Services. There is very little money put into Mental Health despite the fact that so many people are afflicted with mental health problems. We all need to be more aware and try to reach out to vulnerable young people. We need to really listen. Most of all we need
everyone to know that there is always a solution to problems. No one needs to die in this way. If only Beth could have allowed herself to
accept help she would be with us now. We miss her every minute of every day and don’t want other young people to go through these terrible feelings and make this unthinkable decision. We will never get our daughter back. We will never hear her play her guitar, drums or piano again. We will never feel her hugs or see her smile again but we can try to reach out and help other vulnerable young people. So please
join us and support Papyrus prevent other young suicides.
