Just before lockdown we were lucky enough to be on one of the last ski trips DSUK were able to run before not only the overseas trips were halted but all other ski activities have also been put on hold.
They’re a creative bunch though and have kept virtually connected with many of their members, us included, with a series of virtual events, quizzes, talks and even an apres ski virtual party, cocktail making included!
We’re joining in with their Superheroes at Home team. Fortunately we’ve been able to borrow a handcycle during lockdown which has meant we’ve been able to go out cycling together. The suggested target distance is 20K which we’re aiming to cover this Saturday - it will be the furthest William has ever done in a handcycle. I’ll actually be running the first 105 minutes as it’s in my marathon training plan and will either be hopping on to my bike or just hitching a lift on the back of the handcycle!
I know many charities are facing a challenging year but DSUK have been brilliant to us personally so we’d like to give something back raising a few quid whilst having fun too. Thank you!
Many of us across the world are feeling trapped in our homes and are no longer able to experience life as we used to only a few short weeks ago. Even if we manage to leave our homes, many of us are experiencing anxiety when weighing up the risks associated with stepping out of the front door.
For many of Disability Snowsport UKs skiers and snowboarders these were the challenges they faced before Covid-19, challenges that DSUK has helped them to address.
As well as bringing physical, mental health and social benefits that translate into other areas of their lives, it means freedom. Working with DSUK, disabled people get to choose their line, their speed, and get to feel the sheer exhilaration of the rushing ice-cold wind on their face as they learn to master the mountain.
We want to ensure they can get back to freedom as soon as it is safe to do so, to rebuild confidence, independence, social networks and health benefits that they may have lost.
