JOURNEY TO
BEN NEVIS…
Ben Yates
Hello! My name is Ben and I have set myself a monster challenge to complete this June!
- The mission: I am cycling to Ben Nevis in Scotland and climbing it!. Its approx a 590mile cycle and I aim to complete the journey in 9 days using only myself and my bike!
- Aim: to raise as much money as I can for http://www.savethechildren.org.uk who are currently providing vital aid to the children of the Haiti earthquake disaster.
- When?: I'm am going to leave meopham cricket green (my home village)on 19/6/10 And reach the top of Ben Nevis on 27/6/10
Why?
I am a young and healthy 22 year old man who has had nothing but an easy path in life thanks to my good upbringing and the good quality of life here in England.
Ok so I have seen my parents divorce, been dumped and have been hard up from time to time! but never have I been starved or unable to seek medical help?
Had my house destroyed by an earthquake or been forced to flee my home due to war and conflict?
Me cycling to Ben Nevis isn't going to directly save children. but if the money i raise can help a child in the slightest, then that child is ever so slightly closer to the secure and safe upbringing that I've had.
The pain I will go through on my journey is nothing compared to that of a suffering child. I couldn’t imagine the pain my parents would feel if they saw me starve to death before i was 5
As you know there is a huge amount being donated by the public to DEC (disaster emergency committee) which ‘savethechildren’ are part of but there are still those who turn a blind eye and soon enough these TV campaigns will stop and people will forget that these people still need help.
My journey is in June and I'm going to keep people informed that children constantly need help

SAVE THE CHILDREN:
This year almost nine million children around the world could die from basic illnesses before their fifth birthday. ‘Savethechildren’ have stopped this happening in rich countries –and now doing there best to stop it in poor countries too.
‘Savethechildren’ are working flat out to ensure children get proper healthcare, food, education and protection.
‘We're saving lives in emergencies, campaigning for children's rights, and improving their futures through long-term development work’.

SAVE THE CHILDREN:IN HAITI
The earthquake hit about 10 miles south-west of Port-au-Prince, the densely-populated Haitian capital, causing massive loss of life , damage to property and affecting an estimated 1.8 million residents.
With much of the city in ruins, the death toll has been estimated to be 100,000 or higher — making it by far the worst disaster in Haiti in over 200 years.
There is no running water or electricity, and Save the Children staff on the scene report that some half of all homes were damaged or destroyed. While international relief is reaching the stricken city, children and families who survived are in dire need of shelter and support. The earthquake hit in the afternoon when many children were in school and separated from their families.
Many schools collapsed during the tremors. Children have been sleeping among dead bodies, which lie strewn on the ground in many areas.
