Story
On 20th March 2011, Ben and David will be running the Reading Half Marathon to raise money for the Royal British Legion in memory of Guardsman Christopher Davies (Irish Guards, 1st Btn) who died aged 22, in an ambush on 17th November 2010 in Helmand, Afghanistan. He was the 100th soldier to die in Afghanistan in 2010 (345th overall). Chris leaves behind a young daughter Lucy (6) and loving and proud family and friends.
I (Ben) knew Chris through his girlfriend of the past four years Emma, the younger sister of my girlfriend Kate. Emma has already pledged to do a skydive in Chris's memory (https://www.bmycharity.com/V2/ourchristopher; please feel free to visit/donate) and has, at the time of writing, raised over £5500 for Help for Heroes.
David has agreed to help me raise whatever we can for the RBL as a gesture of appreciation. We originally signed up for the run with no charity in mind. However having visited Wootton Bassett, I and others were sincerely touched by the RBL volunteers who had travelled many miles to welcome him back with dignity, and to assist the family and friends with compassion. The RBL does fantastic work not only in these ceremonies but in making sure that all servicemen and women are remembered, wherever they are asked to serve, through the annual poppy appeal and Remembrance service.
Neither of us are particularly fit (despite pounding the streets in London's bleak midwinter), but we will run ourselves into the ground on the day. Please give what you can.
Many Thanks,
Ben & David.
