Re-scheduled, due to Covid, hats off to the guys who helped save my life….
Following on from 2021 where myself, and a small band of brothers on smart turbos completed the VR Maratona dles Dolomite following the obvious cancellation of the 2020 event. We completed the 2.5 vertical Km, in virtual reality, raising money for the Air Ambulance.
Cancelled again for 2021, I have changed event to the Giro di Lombardia, and more familiar surroundings….
Back-story....
2nd April 2017, I set off on what I thought was going to be a typical weekend training ride.I had signed up to a few events and was really looking forward to another summer of cycling, with my 18 month old son..
A couple hours into the hills of the Peak District, I was taken off my bike. It wasn’t looking good.
The air ambulance were prompt to the scene and might have saved my life! I was airlifted to the intensive care unit at Stoke General Hospital.
I was in a coma and had suffered a traumatic brain injury, with severe brain damage. What followed was weeks in hospital, the first couple were scary times for my family as I was in a coma in the ICU, but eventually I was moved to Salford and started my rehabilitation.
Rehab has been a big part of my life for the past five years. Naturally I struggled to get back on the bike, and I really wanted to find my passion again.
In January 2019 I went out on my first post accident ride. It was disconcerting, but once finished, a weight felt it had been lifted. Just a short one round Cheshire but I was back on a bike!!!
A few months later a good friend nervously asked if I wanted to do the Maratona, a famous cycling event in the North of Italy. YES, THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED!
All organised and raring to go again in ‘21, let’s see....nope.
At 30kg heavier than when I came off, I have switched the high peaks of the Dolomites, for the ‘slightly’ less elevated Giro Di Lombardia, near Lake Como.
Less elevated, but with ramps of 25%+, the 30kg could still be an issue.
Here goes nothing….
