Fundraising for Debt Justice
Story
This year I am running the Great North Run half-marathon (13.1 miles) in aid of 3 excellent charities as part of the Newcastle University Team.
Half of the funds raised will go to Jubilee Debt Campaign, 40% to Save the Children and 10% to StopAIDS
Jubilee Debt Campaign benefits some of the most impoverished nations by billions of pounds each year through the cancellation of unpayable debt and redirection of the freed up resources into health care and education.
The Commission for Africa found that Benin was using 54% of its first tranche of debt relief on health; in Tanzania, relief has put an extra two million children (mostly girls) into primary school; in Mozambique, it has been used to provide universal vaccination for children; in Uganda, an extra two million now have clean water; and so on. The fight against HIV/AIDS has been a major beneficiary of debt relief in many countries.
Save the Children are an international charity working to give children a brighter future through direct provision of food, education and healthcare as well as challenging world leaders to keep their promises.
In 2005 world leaders promised to provide Universal Access to HIV prevention, treatment care and support by 2010. Yet, thousands of people are still dying every day of AIDS-related illnesses, unable to access the essential services they need to stay alive. StopAIDS campaigns for universal access to treatment and prevention, to ensure that no one is left behind and we can look forward to a future without AIDS.
