Story
Next week, I will be taking part in the ‘Cross Continents for Covid-19’ fundraising event. The event consists of a 48 hour relay that is taking place around the world, involving over 100 runners from across 6 continents. I will be running at 5:30am GMT on Tuesday (12th May) for one hour, before handing the virtual baton onto a runner, who will most likely be in a completely different continent!
The event is organised by my friend Lucy Metcalf, who I met whilst travelling across South America before Christmas. It was great to meet new people, and experience different cultures, as we moved from country-to-country. However, in doing so, there was a sobering sense of just how much people’s livelihoods and their families depends on tourism. The virus has inevitably meant that the tourists have stopped coming, as it spreads through communities, with little to no infrastructure to prevent the spread, and treat those who become infected.
The money raised from this event will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontierès (Doctors Without Borders) an international charity that, for almost 50 years, has provided medical aid to those who need it most. MSF are currently helping health authorities across the globe to provide care for patients with Covid-19, protect high risk and vulnerable people, and keep essential medical services running across a number of countries worldwide.
MSF's emergency teams are experts at fighting disease outbreaks. I'm raising funds to support the medical teams on the ground as they respond to the coronavirus crisis. Right now, MSF is providing urgently needed medical care and support in more than 70 countries to counter the coronavirus disease. MSF's medical teams are also gearing up to confront potential outbreaks in the hundreds of areas they were already working before the pandemic struck. MSF are deploying medics, sending supplies and applying nearly 50 years of experience fighting epidemics to protect the most vulnerable and save lives.
