Story

Hi, my name is Ben Evans and I am 19 years old.

During my gap year, I decided to embark on a challenge that would both push the boundaries of my capabilities as a swimmer but also as a person to the limit. The Channel swim being regarded as one of the toughest and most prestigious challenges for any swimmer to achieve will, therefore, require me to perform at a high level both mentally and physically.

The swim is in commemoration for the loved ones I have lost and the hardworking professionals of the NHS:

My grandmother sadly lost her battle to inflammatory breast cancer and witnessing first hand the struggle and pain cancer inflicted on her it motivated me to ensure I was never left in a position where I was deemed powerless and helpless to help. As an aspiring doctor, I wanted to dedicate my time and efforts to improving the wellbeing of others. Volunteering at Alderhey Children's Hospital and Clatterbridge Hospital during my gap year it provided me with invaluable experience. Working beside the professionals and volunteers has been an honour. I idolise the men and women that have worked tirelessly during these difficult times. Hope that this act will be a sufficient thankyou for the heroes of our NHS. Unfortunately, during lockdown both my Grandad's passed away which has been very difficult for my families to come to terms with but I know that they would be proud of what I hope to achieve in September.

Despite the current climate of Covid-19 I have still been training hard. The novelty of swimming in freezing cold water early in the morning has rapidly worn off. however,I have also built my way up to achieving 8-hour swims at Liverpool Watersports centre and competing in the Mersey swim which I was fortunate enough to participate in.

I am being sponsored by Zaybu Limited who are covering the costs of the swim and so every penny raised goes directly to Macmillan Cancer Support!
