Fundraising for Donald Woods Foundation
Story
Thank you very much for looking at my Just Giving page. I'm running this year's London 10k on behalf of the Donald Woods Foundation and you can find some information about the charity below, or on their website: www.donaldwoods.org. It would be fantastic if you felt able to sponsor me - any amount would be hugely appreciated as a little bit of cash goes a long way in the very deprived region of South Africa where the Foundation works.
The Foundation is a registered charity which supports programmes in health, education and community-building across South Africa, with its major focus on projects in Mbashe - the area of South Africa where both Nelson Mandela and Donald Woods were born. Much of this area suffers around 89% unemployment and is in desperate need of the most basic of resources. To date DWF has built 11 clinics in remote areas far from regional hospitals, enabling 100 000 HIV tests, 50 000 TB tests and bringing live-saving medication to over 6 000 people with HIV. According to independent experts, DWF now runs the "most effective treatment and care programme in rural South Africa".
In addition, the Foundation is supporting teachers in 41 isolated and highly deprived rural schools, helping them to change the futures of tens of thousands of children. And it provides a wide-ranging programme of care to around 3 000 of the region's most vulnerable children - those who have lost one or both parents to HIV or TB, or are in danger of losing a parent.
Any money raised would help the Foundation to invest in a broad range of vital equipment and capacity-building. Every amount counts - for instance, £3.95 is the cost of screening one person or child on an outreach day. Each person tested HIV positive can then be treated, so £3.95 is the initial cost of saving a life.
