On 8th September Luke & I (with Julien in the sling) have decided to join the “Walk for Wards 10k”. I am also running Sheffield 10k. To raise funds for Jessops Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU) for the amazing work that they do every single day, but in particular for the outstanding care that they provided for our family following the birth of our beautiful son Julien.
At 26 weeks pregnant I experienced PPROM (my waters broke) which meant there was a chance that our baby would be born early/with complications. We were monitored closely throughout the rest of my pregnancy and managed to make it to 37 weeks mostly unscathed.
Julien Otto Alexander Gladwin was born on the 4th June 2019 at Bassetlaw Hospital but unfortunately he was finding it very difficult to breathe. He was taken to Bassetlaw SCBU for assessment, they found he had NRDS, PPHN & an echodense left lung and needed specialist care and so he was rushed to Jessops NICU.
I couldn’t go to Jessops that day as I experienced a postpartum haemorrhage so Luke went with Julien. When they arrived, Luke was met with overwhelming support and care from the Drs and nurses in NICU. They quickly put him at ease in an extremely frightening and stressful situation.
Julien was at Jessops for 8 days in total and whilst there, Luke and I were provided with a family room with a double bed, bathroom, kitchen etc right next to NICU. This meant we could be close to Julien at all times and that his big sister Eliza could comfortably visit without having to spend the whole time in NICU, which can be very daunting for a 2 year old.
I was provided with face-to-face support on how to express my milk, a double breast pump and all of the equipment needed which meant I was able to provide Julien with my breastmilk exclusively even whilst he was being tube fed.
We consistently received informative and clear updates from the Drs on Julien’s condition, explained simply so that we could understand. The Drs always spent time to answer our questions and never made us feel like we were taking up their time.
All of the nurses were kind, encouraging and extremely hard working. They really spent the time getting to know us and making us feel at ease. They were patient when teaching us how to care for Julien (tube feeding, cleaning him, changing him etc) and respected our wishes/requests regarding his care.
The time that Julien spent in Jessops was the worst time of our lives but was made easier by the amazing staff. We will forever be grateful for the care he received and the support we were given.
We are hoping to raise £300 as our way of thanking them for everything they have done for our family ♥️
