Story
Inspired TWSMRT’s fundraising lead, Sarah, who ran the Great North Run in 2022, I am delighted to be able to run the Great North Run in 2023 in support of the fantastic Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team.
Despite being a fairly new volunteer with the fundraising team, one thing that became immediately clear to me is the wide ranging impact the charity has; an impact that extends far beyond the mountains. Sarah and I volunteered at some park run events last summer to raise awareness of the work the charity does and I was astounded by the people who approached us to share personal stories of connection to the charity and the heroic work of the volunteers.
The rescue team consists of about 50 volunteers, all on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All our volunteers have full time jobs and meet almost all their own expenses. The team will typically respond to between 40 and 50 requests for help every year. Team vehicles, rescue kit, medical supplies and operational running costs are in excess of £55,000 per year so we rely on donations from the public to allow us to continue providing this free public emergency service.
As a keen runner (more ‘slothlete’ than athlete but nevertheless KEEN 🤣), I am excited to take part in this iconic half-marathon and raise money for a fantastic cause.
I run frequently anyway, but ‘proper’ training has recently commenced and I will periodically keep you updated on my progress. ( As an aside, if you see me staggering back from a run, please feel free to buy me a coffee and I will pay the equivalent amount back into the fundraising kitty!)
All donations are hugely appreciated and big thanks for your support! ❤️
