Becky's 810km challenge

810k challenge · 19 December 2022
I have friends and family who are living with cancer. I have friends and family whom I’ve lost through cancer. My dad has pancreatic cancer.
Having been diagnosed in August, he’s since undergone a major surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, battled three infections and is now navigating his way through 6 months of chemotherapy.
So, whilst he negotiates the twists and turns of chemo I’ve decided to put myself through my own physical challenge - running 5k every day for the duration of his treatment, a small matter of 168 days consecutive running. We will both be coming out the other side of this skinnier than before, but fingers crossed our fighting spirit and mental resilience will endure for the duration.
My dad has chosen University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Charity for any monies raised. The charity supports patients, families and NHS staff across four hospitals in the West Midlands - Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull. In particular, the money will go to UHB Charity's Liver Foundation UK which supports research conducted by the hospital’s liver unit, which is the largest of its kind in Europe. From looking at new treatments for chronic liver disease and cancer to pioneering transplant work, research enables staff to improve the quality and length of life of patients.
I started this challenge on 1st December and fingers crossed will make it all the way to my final run on 17th May 2023.
So, please give if you’re able to. Id be thrilled to be able to match my distance run with £ for the charity to continue its work and help to give more patients in the future the chance of a better outcome. If you’re not able to donate, please spare a thought for me as I trudge the streets in all weathers. All positive vibes gratefully received!
