Story
Becki Reynolds was born with a metabolic disorder known as LCHAD, a condition in which the body is unable to break down certain fats. It is considered a fatty acid oxidation condition because people affected by LCHAD are unable to change some of the fats they eat into energy the body needs to function. This was an unknown disorder when she was born, leading to a number of early complications including blindness, heart failure, and more. When finally diagnosed at the age of three and long-chain fat removed from her diet, her condition stabilized.
Despite the challenges of a limited energy system and legal blindness, she went on to eventually become salutorian of her high school class, earn a degree in mathematics from Oberlin University, marry, and is now the proud mother of amazing 8 year old twins.
Her life has been a series of firsts, from the first diagnosed with LCHAD, to the first person with LCHAD to have children, and as the oldest living person with LCHAD, now breaking ground on how the condition affects the body as we age. Recent breakthroughs in science have allowed her primary research physician, Dr. Jerry Vockley, to target and develop a number of therapies that address various parts of the deficient energy system, but they need funding to get through preliminary research and into clinical trials. This fund is laser focused on moving these specific therapies through this preliminary stage and into clinical trials for people like Becki.
We had always considered funding medical research outside the realm of possibility but again, recent advances/circumstances have lowered the barrier and made it possible to drastically reduce the time it takes to get a potentially life-changing therapy to human trials. By donating to this fund, you are not just helping Becki continue her trailblazing life of firsts, but the lives of thousands more following in her footsteps.
