Eden Marathon 2011 · 9 October 2011 ·

We support the RVC's animal hospitals to help them treat 20,000 animals a year

Story

On the 9th October 2011 I will be taking part in the Eden Project Half Marathon in aid of VetAid Kenya and the East Africa Emergency appeal.

The drought in Africa has forced over one million cattle south into the Tana delta district of Kenya. This is the worst drought experienced in the last 60 years. The RVC has launched a fundraising appeal to feed and vaccinate these animals and support the communities dependant on them for their livelihoods.

Some of the livelstock arriving from drought areas to the Tana Delta district are infected with contagious caprine or bovine pleuropneumonia. Other threats include babesiosis and foot-and-mouth disease.

VetAid Kenya is the only veterinary agency working in this area and their 8-man team is overwhelmed. They would like to raise £10,000 to treat an additional 20,000 animals each week. According the the RCV website:

  • £20 will buy 300 small stock vaccine doses;
  • £150 will hire a 4WD vehicle for a week and buy sufficient diesel to get a vaccination team into the field;
  • £10,000 will support three veterinary teams; cold-chain; transport and vaccinations for four weeks
