Story
The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre (Beatson) is the busiest radiotherapy centre in the UK and is presently operating at close to maximum capacity. The level of activity is unsustainable and steps need to be taken to increase the available capacity for the West of Scotland population.
Lanarkshire Beatson will be a new £22 million West of Scotland Satellite Radiotherapy Centre, based at Monklands General Hospital taking into account a range of factors including travel times, clinical benefits, and site requirements. This will include two state-of-the-art linear accelerators, which deliver high-energy radiation to shrink tumours and kill cancer cells, with expansion space for a third machine, if required. It will also have a CT simulator to help plan radiotherapy treatment.
Beatson Cancer Charity is committed to aiming to raise £500,000 to further enhance the Lanarkshire Beatson. The design of cancer centre buildings can have an impact on the way people feel and respond to treatment. We will also fund staff who will provide a range of patient and family support services including wellbeing and complementary therapy services on an ongoing basis to a similar standard to the world-class services we already provide from our current Glasgow site.
This much needed new facility for the West of Scotland, and particularly Lanarkshire, will see 21,000 patient treatments delivered each year. By enhancing the facilities and improving the experience Beatson Cancer Charity will impact positively on between 1,000 and 1,200 cancer patients and their families each year with a significantly improved environment for cancer patients and their families while then providing the same effective patient and family support services we currently provide in Glasgow. This will provide long term ongoing benefits to thousands of cancer patients and their families
