For years I’ve enjoyed a challenge, with a penchant for long canal bike rides!
So far it’s been the Cheshire Ring three times (98 miles, around 8 hours each for the first two, 7 hours this year) and the Leeds Liverpool Canal (132 miles, 10 hours pedalling, 12 hours with stops).
My ultimate goal for a long time has been to ride from Manchester to London, all on canal towpaths in less than 24 hours. This summer is the time to try for the first time!
This ride will be in memory of my sister, Miranda Cooksey, who was born before me, but unfortunately we never met. She was born with spina bifida which was too severe for her to stay with us...
SHINE, the spina bifida charity, support those born with this disorder and their families and it’s for them that I am fund-raising for.
The route is 238 miles, leaving from Manchester Piccadilly and finishing at London Kings Cross (right by Nando’s which will give me a finishing time target!). I’ll stick to canal towpaths all the way (where possible, only leaving to ride over tunnels or where the path is closed). I’m aiming for 19-20 hours but a lot will depends on my legs, weather and path conditions. Starting at 4am from Manchester, finishing hopefully in time for last orders at Nando’s!
I’m aiming for the 1st/2nd of July for the first attempt, choice made soon before based on weather.
If I don’t make it on the first attempt then I’ll try again the next week (if I can). Failing that, I’ll try again next year!
I’m not asking for any sponsorship for equipment, accommodation or supplies. All that is supplied by me. I’m only asking for donations to SHINE.
Many thanks for your contributions, James.
