Story
Barry died 13 Nov, aged 47, after 10 years (last 7 on his own) fighting the terrible Motor Neurone Disease. Steady deterioration over the final 4 years robbed him completely of the use of all limbs, speech and the ability to eat. Previously a most active diesel engine rail enthusiast, in 1995 his main interest became walking (Dartmoor especially), before graduating to the mountains – up to a maximum of 18000 feet and including 212 of Scotland’s Munro’s. Finally had to hang up his ice axe and crampons in 2010, by which time he’d had to give up his work as a police motor technician and his partner of 12 years had left him, forcing the sale of their house. He then set out to travel “until the money runs out, or I do”, managing over 320,000 miles and visiting every continent except Antarctica, until he was forced into his wheelchair in 2012. He published 2 photo albums, one of his travels, the other of his mountains, both aimed at encouraging others receiving a terminal diagnosis to make the fullest use of every remaining moment. He certainly did, never once complaining about his lot, but staying fiercely determined, courageous and independant right to the very end.
