Story
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
Genevieve and Caroline Barr are running the Great North Run for the National Deaf Children's Society (easy for Genevieve but a big challenge for the old girl!). Sabrina is also running the Junior Great North Run.
If you know Genevieve, then you will understand that she is an amazing woman who has made her deafness a challenge rather than a disability. She has overcome so much and, having completed her degree is now training to teach for the charity Teach First in an inner-London school.
We want to make a difference for other deaf children and their families and to help them to be as independent as Genevieve has become. Genevieve's deafness has made a huge impact on our lives and the courage she has found is an inspiration. We had lots of help - speech therapists, teachers for the deaf, fantastic and supportive teachers at her two schools and support throughout university - not everyone is so fortunate.
This is so important to us and we really hope you will sponsor us.
Just three weeks to go till the day and my feet are a disaster area, my knees are creaking and I wake up every morning wondering why I am putting myself through this at my age. Then I remember how generous you have all been and how special my daughter is - and I take a couple of imbruprofen! Tomorrow I will be doing my last long run before the day (provided no more body parts are complaining in the morning) and then I just need to survive the next three weeks without Robbie treading on my feet - again!
In future I will be acting my age, not taking on ridiculous challenges and only behaving like a juvenile delinquent when under the influence - promise!
4 days to go!!! I have just done my last training run with Jo who has been working with me since June. I am getting nervous about doing the run and hoping that it will all be ok on the day. Most of all I am looking forward to doing this with Genevieve.
Thanks so much for helping us to help deaf children. And, oh yes, I have now promised Robert that I will never do this again!
Monday 6th October. We did it! Thanks so much to all of you for helping us to raise so much money. We had a brilliant day and the sun shone on us. The atmosphere was amazing and we saw Rebecca Adlington at the start and got a shout on local radio for the NDCS . Genevieve completed the run in an impressive 1 hour 50 minutes beating her previous time by nine minutes and I managed it in 2 hours and 18 minutes beating my last time (5 years younger!) by nearly 7 minutes. As I type this I am sitting here with an ice pack on my left knee which seems to be significantly larger than my right, but my remaining toe nails are still in place! It has been well worth the pain (I might want to revise that tomorrow!) and effort and a massive thank you to all of you who wished us well, and especially to Jo Hope from Ripon Tennis Club who patiently (and ruthlessly!) trained me over the last three months.
Thank you all for helping us... and no, definitely never doing it again! x
