Story
Our 16 year old son, Ben, had a cardiac arrest at the end of December. Thankfully our story has a very positive outcome.
Ben had gone for lunch at a mates house. When he arrested, his friend's mother was his guardian angel and administered CPR. Ben went by helicopter to St George's hospital. He had excellent care and had a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted.
Ben is back at school full-time and doing well although patience its needed to get full energy levels and resume his beloved sport. So a very positive and amazing outcome for us as a family, in that he is safer now than he ever was with the S-ICD fitted and when you also learn the survival rate is less than 1 in 10 for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.
This significant moment brings even more appreciation of a life well lived. Every young person should have a bright and happy future. Hence the 350 mile cycle, sleeping under the stars on the way, and then, with 50 fabulous Hays colleagues climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) for the charity EveryYouth.
