Story
The UK Men’s Sheds Association supports the development and continuing expansion of community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. Groups of men come together to participate in activities in a space similar to those of garden sheds, except in this case this being about social connections and sharing skills rather than in solitude.
The shed allows men to pursue their common interests such as practicing skills of making and mending with crafts such as woodworking, metalworking, repairing, restoring, electronics, model building, and car building.
These sheds generally attract older males in the community although they are all-inclusive and open to any age and gender. It is a place for those seeking to reduce isolation and loneliness in their life by getting together with others in their community, which in turn provides social bonds that create powerful positive impacts on overall health and everyday life.
There are currently 460 Men’s Sheds in the UK, 133 in development with over 11,000 estimated participants. The Barnes Community Association (BCA) is currently in the process of creating a Men’s Shed in Barnes though additional funds are needed to move forward with the project.
