Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my page

My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer just under a year ago. After chemotherapy and radiotherapy her prognosis is good, but non-medical support makes a huge difference to ongoing recovery. Sometimes it's important for a person with cancer to be able to talk to someone outside their friends and relatives, ideally someone who has also had cancer and who understands quite what that means. Breast-cancer-care aims to provide that support; £132 pays to connect someone going through breast cancer with a trained volunteer who has had a similar experience to them, matched on an individual basis; £650 pays for someone affected by breast cancer to receive regular support at home, over the phone as part of a Telephone Support Group, with a specialist nurse to answer any questions.
I feel this is a really important cause- not just from a personal point of view (5 female relatives have had breast cancer) but because 1 in 9 women will develop this cancer and it affects hundreds of thousands of us all, women and men. You can tell how important it is to me as I'm walking for 10 miles (yes miles, not kilometers), without any certainty of chocolate at the end! We will never be able to eradicate terminal illnesses, but supportive listening will always make a difference to those with cancer, and those who care about them, and just knowing that that support is available makes a massive difference. 'It is not so much our friends' help that helps us, as the confidence of their help.' So I very much hope that you in turn can support and sponsor me in this herculean endeavour (ok- I know, it's only a walk- how hard can it be for someone as fit and athletic as me?.. I rest my case)
