Story
The combination of poverty and disability is toxic. Add stigma and discrimination, and the mix is even more destructive. Of the estimated 2.5 million children with disabilities in Uganda, UNICEF suggest over 90% may not be in school. Of the children with disabilities who do attend primary school, 94% will fail to complete primary education and only 6% make it to secondary education
I've visited Rukungiri, in South-western Uganda. A rural disadvantaged area. Rukungiri has the worst rates of school participation for children with disabilities in all of Uganda, apart from the war-ravaged north-east. Global Care want to raise a minimum of £35,000 to develop new initiatives targeting children with mobility difficulties in rural Rukungiri.
Initially, they plan to develop facilities on the site of Kahororo Primary School, a Church of Uganda-run government school. We've visited Kahororo twice, and seen the impact of a feeding programme for the youngest children. We've seen school attendance improve alongside a reduction in malnutrition and improved health amongst the children
We've visited the Ark disability Day Care centre in the North of Uganda in Soroti. We believe in the work of Global Care. We believe children with disability in Uganda deserve the same rights as children everywhere.
