Story
As with so many people the first that I'd heard about Motor Neuron Disease was when rugby legend Doddie Weir announced his diagnosis back in June 2017.
From the outset, Doddie has been driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable disease.
In November 2017, Doddie and his trustees launched the registered charity, My Name'5 Doddie Foundation. Their vision is simple: A World Free of MND.
The number "5" is a special number for the Foundation. It features in the Foundation's name and is a reference to Doddie's playing number for his clubs, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, and the jersey he wore when he earned his 61 caps for Scotland.
We were at the Scotland v New Zealand match and were so moved when Doddie and his boys brought out the rugby ball. What an atmosphere that was!
Since his announcement I have followed and supported the Foundation wherever and whenever I can. From donating money, buying merchandise and spreading the word via my social media platforms to taking part in and photographing numerous fundraising events for the Foundation.
Why this cycle challenge? Well it's partly because I wanted to do something big, something really challenging before I hit 50 later this year and partly because I want to continue to support the Foundation and the wider MND family - raising even more money and awareness.
Being fairly new to cycling (just before lockdown) and due to a chronic foot injury I've found a real enjoyment on two wheels. How to combine the two - cycling and something really big? Well there's only one thing in the UK to do that then isn't there... cycle Land's End to John O'Groats?!
Follow my journey, follow the Foundation and please give whatever you can - it really does make a difference to those living with MND.
