Story

Well dudes,

We are part of the AWF, who are doing a collaboration with the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF) in Sri Lanka. This initiative has started because of the severe problems that have risen over the last number of decades and that the Asian Elephant have faced.  We want to stop Asia’s largest land mammal from becoming extinct. It is humans that are causing the harm and it is only humans that can stop this devastation. It is our goal to work with the MEF to create a centre for these friendly giants and create awareness globally as the Asian elephant is at risk of becoming extinct within the next 40 years in the wild. We know that it is possible to save these animals as the African elephant was saved from the brink of extinction in the late 1980’s through major conservation efforts. Therefore it is our aim as young, passionate volunteers to raise the funds to carry out research, raise awareness and educate so that their survival can become a reality. We will support and develop projects not only in Sri Lanka but throughout Asia and we have already project proposals in Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia. Therefore it is essential to raise not only funds but also awareness because the conflicts between humans and elephants have heightened as the elephants are seen as pests in Asian due to rogue elephants being aggressive and those that raid crops. However it is human activity such as logging, human settlement and habitat loss that cause these animals to enter the populated areas where they are usually shot.

Another major threat to elephants are poachers who have devastated the population, creating a situation where the males have dramatically reduced in numbers due to the ivory industry.

The capture of wild elephants for domestic use has become a threat to some wild populations where numbers have seriously reduced.

The world population of the Asian Elephant is estimated to be around 60,000, which is a tenth of the number of African elephants. There were nearly 12,000 elephants in Sri Lanka at the turn of the 19 Century but today is estimated to be about 4,200. The human race must take responsibility and initiative to understand and learn from these animals and this is why we need your help. Anything that you feel that you can contribute will help immensely, and start the conservation of this precious species. This project will not only open your eyes and heart, it will change your perspective for the rest of your life. So if you would like more information or are interested in volunteering get in contact with the team. THANK YOU.
