Water Well Drilling –

Later this year in October / November 2010 I have the privilege of being part of Friends in Action drill team going to , . We hope to drill and install 4 water wells for the Gorma & Fulani people in the remote north east of were even the government have been reluctant to send drillers.  

This area is very isolated, there are no paved roads, only a bicycle track through the bush and the team will have to sleep in the villages were they drill. The Friends in Action team which were  in this region last season were the first group of white men that some of the children in the village had ever seen.

Ongoing Needs

One of our team members who was part of a drill team last season works for NI Water - They kindly supplied a number of in-field water quality testing kits. It was found that all of the existing village water supplies (hand dug wells) supplied water that would be the direct equivalent of you and I opening the sewers and drinking our neighbourhoods own untreated sewage.  They showed doctors photos of the village children and adults with various skin and physical ailments - sadly the majority were exhibiting conditions linked to contaminated drinking water.  We often take for granted our clean tap water - thankfully Friends in Action was able to provide access to the clean water buried underground using simple low - maintenance hand pump wells

Because of the poor quality of water available often the women and children have to walk up to per day simply to get enough water for their families’ daily needs and the next day they’ll have to do it all again!
