Story

UPDATE:  1 January 2023: Following further discussions with Section Ranger Dennis Kelly, senior Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife staff, and Mark Gerrard at Wildlife Act Trust Fund about K9 Unit in the Park, Save the Rhino International worked up a 3-year proposal (December 2022 to
December 2025 inclusive) to submit to an American foundation. WE ARE DELIGHTED to announce that SRI has been awarded US$97,000 for the expansion of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park’s K9 Unit.

UPDATE:  28 August:  £8,000 (the wonderful folks at Save the Rhino International rounded up the donation) has been sent out to the K9 Unit at HiP.

UPDATE 13 June:  Due to the incredible generosity of all the artists
involved, the Art Fundraiser will continue until 30 June to try and raise the much needed money to hire an additional dog handler.

UPDATE 30 June:  £7,400 has been raised to date (some artists are finalising sales and will send in their donations soon).

. . . . . . . . . .

Since 1 January 2022, 115 rhinos have been killed by poachers in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi (HIP) Park in South Africa. After Kruger National Park introduced dehorning in 2019, pressure has intensified in HIP.

There are currently three dogs in the HIP K9 Unit, but not enough handlers. This fundraiser has been set up to raise money to:

  • train another handler (R42,000 / £2,120)
  • to cover their salary for at least a year (R132,000 / £6,660)
  • funds needed for medication (ticks/worms) per year (R12,000 / £610)
  • funds needed for vehicle maintenance per year (R20,000/£1,010)
  • funds for equipment - night vision, IR strobes, harnesses, storage for food, etc (R75,000/£3,800)
The K9 unit was set up in 2019 and has already had considerable successes resulting in a number of prosecutions.

All money is being donated via Save the Rhino International who already support HIP as one of their many projects around the world.  100% of the money raised through this page will go towards HIP's K9 unit.  Of the price being paid for each piece 50% will be kept by the artists as payment for their work and 50% is a donation to the fundraiser.

TO PURCHASE any of the artworks message the artist directly through Facebook or Instagram (details in the caption for each photo) or email artforrhinos@gmail.com.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the Save the Rhino. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
