Story
Thank you for birthday wishes and your gifts to the charities. I’m leaving the pages open for now so it’s not too late. Any donations gratefully received. Brilliant effort - so thank you again!
Hi.
Well it was to be a day for a big party. But, dark times as we’re not able to meet family and friends in this way. Still, can I hold on to the thought that you would have bought me a drink had you been able to?! Maybe that gift could be redirected?
Dr Arrieta with Goya
GOYA (1746 - 1828) suffered a serious illness in 1819, possibly viral. His friend and physician Eugenio Arrieta cared for him. In the absence of effective medicines Dr Arrieta nursed Goya back to health.
Following his recovery Goya painted a self-portrait to record and thank his carer. The painting was completed 200 years ago in 1820. The work places the practical compassion of Dr Arrieta at the centre of the painting. The supporting arm, the hand on the shoulder, the offered sustenance, the likely words of encouragement. We can imagine these words would encourage Goya to paint again. After all, Goya’s thank you is a painting. And it's one that additionally affirms the value of compassion, art, friendship, love ... at times of suffering and darkness.
'Cadent Star (Still be True)' is a song that re-imagines the scene and themes of the painting. Thank you to Robin for his lovely singing. Thank you to Tom for his lovely piano playing.
So, I’m fundraising for two charities aiming to bring art and music to care settings. I believe these have the potential to enrich compassion and relationships. Please make a contribution if you can.
Thank you
