Story
I was inspired to organize the Clips for Cancer Event after meeting with patient Mackenzie Hummer, 19 then, and her parents, Carrie and Doug Hummer.
"I fell in love with her that day, I mean, look at that smile. How can you not? I decided I needed to do something to show her how much she matters, how much we love her and how we understand her journey."
"Four years ago I had my head shaved by Mackenzie who inspired me to hold this event." Mackenzie has been an inspiration to me. From the moment I met her, I knew she possessed more strength and courage in her little body than I could ever hope to. I was simultaneously encouraged by her strength and saddened by the struggle that is so real in the lives of those we serve. I knew that day that in order to really care for our patients and families, we needed to connect with them and show our support and solidarity in a fun, yet meaningful way. Through this head-shaving event we show these children that being bald is beautiful, and while we many never have the strength they do, we are with them in their journey.
This year I'm upping the ante! I want to raise $100,000 for these incredible kids. That's $50,000 for my hair and $50,000 for my beard which I am growing out just for Mackenzie!
Over the last few years Mackenzie has battled late-effect complications as a consequence to the treatments she received to save her life. She is now 21, a strong young woman who continues to defy the odds every day. Her strength comes from her faith in God, and a fire deep inside to win this battle. That strength is radiated in a contagious smile..
The children truly are the real heroes. They are inspiring and brave. I see this everyday in my role as the leader of all our Lee Health acute care hospitals and overseeing Women's and Children's services. It's heartwarming to see our community rally and respond to Clips for Cancer. It is a way to celebrate our childhood cancer survivors and current patients on their journey to beat a disease that takes too much of their childhood.
For the past 26 years, Barbara's Friends has helped over 10,000 local SWFL kids with cancer and blood disorders from infancy to age 30. This year alone more than 25 local children have been told they have cancer. Last year 70 children were diagnosed. The numbers are up. More families need your help. Please support our Shavee's by making a donation and share with our friends and family to make a difference in our community. Cancer doesn't care who, when or were. WE DO!
