Story

I was inspired to organize the Clips for Cancer Event after meeting with patient Mackenzie Hummer, 19, and her parents, Carrie and Doug Hummer.

"I fell in love with her that day, I mean, look at that smile. How can you not? I decided I needed to do something to show her how much she matters, how much we love her and how we understand her journey."

"Three years ago I had my head shaved by Mackenzie who inspired me to hold this event." Mackenzie has been an inspiration to me. From the moment I met her, I knew she possessed more strength and courage in her little body than I could ever hope to. I was simultaneously encouraged by her strength and saddened by the struggle that is so real in the lives of those we serve. I knew that day that in order to really care for our patients and families, we needed to connect with them and show our support and solidarity in a fun, yet meaningful way. Through this head-shaving event we showed these children that bald is beautiful, and while we may never have the strength they do, we are with them in their journey.

Over the last few years she has battled late-effect complications as a consequence to the treatments she received to save her life. She is a strong young hero that continues to defy the odds every day. Her strength comes from her faith in God, a fire deep inside to win this battle, and a contagious smile.

The children truly are the real heroes. It's heartwarming to see this level of support once again for brave children during their battle with cancer. We can show these children that bald is beautiful, bald is strong and no matter what, we are fighting alongside of them. While we may never have the strength they do, they need to know we are with them on their journey.

For the past 25 years, Barbara's Friends has helped over 8,000 local SWFL kids with cancer and blood disorders from infancy to age 30. Since March 1, when COVID-19 began, more than 25 local children have been told they have cancer. Last year 49 children were diagnosed. The numbers are up. More families need your help. Please support our Shavees by making a donation and share with your friends and family to make a difference in our community. Cancer doesn't care who, when or where. WE DO!
