The Arighi Bianchi team, are running the Great Manchester 10km Run in aid of East Cheshire Hospice
Since 1988, East Cheshire Hospice has been caring for people suffering from life-limiting illnesses. We put our patients, their carers and families at the centre of everything we do, and our expert medical treatment is only the start of the holistic care we provide.
We prioritise each patient’s needs and wishes, aiming to improve overall quality of life with practical assistance, emotional and spiritual support. At a time when family is so important, we also support carers and relatives with social and family services, counselling, complementary therapies and much more.
All of our services are provided free of charge to those who need them. However, only 17% of our funding is from the government and the remainder is donated by the communities we serve: Buxton, Congleton, High Legh, High Peak, Knutsford, Macclesfield, Poynton, Wilmslow and everywhere in between.
Sometimes a Hospice can be perceived as a scary, sad, dark gloomy place but feedback that we get from families is the complete opposite. If you have ever visited the Hospice, you will have noticed that our building is light, airy, full of smiles and a feeling of being at home. We care for people suffering from life limiting illnesses, with 84.5% of our patients suffering from cancer and 15.5% suffering from heart disease, organ failure and neurological conditions.
We have a 15 bedded inpatient unit consisting of 7 private rooms and 2 four bedded bays, where patients can stay for end-of-life care, rehabilitation and symptom control with the average stay being 16 days. Suffering from a life limiting illness can be an enormous shock to patients and their families and that’s why we offer services that support the whole family. Our Sunflower Wellbeing centre supports anyone whose life have been affected by the diagnosis of a life limiting illness. We help them through support groups, counselling and complimentary therapies. We hope that the patients and their families will be relieved from anxiety and given the tools and knowledge to live well at home.
We believe that people facing end of life should have the choice to receive care wherever they feel most comfortable. That’s why we launched our Hospice @Home service in 2017 which gives end of life patients more choice and control to remain at home if they wish to.
We now have two community nursing teams supporting people 24 hours a day both from crisis prevention and also personal care all co-ordinated from our hub at East Cheshire Hospice. We are currently caring for 55 people in our community that have chosen to be at home at end of life, which in comparison to our inpatient unit where on average we care for 15 people every two week, were able to care for so many more people in our community.
