Story
Hi, my name is Richard O'Donnell and my son Archie wanted to raise money for The Darby Rimmer Foundation by completing the 100K in May challenge. Archie will be completing the 100k on his bike alongside myself. He is 6 years old and has only been riding without stabilisers for 4 weeks.
Our aim is to raise as much money as possible and have set a target of £250.
Thank you for visiting our page!
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a neurological condition which affects the nerves in the brain and spiral cord. MND affects a persons arms and legs resulting in the inability to do the basic things like wash, feed and dress yourself. It affects your ability to swallow which leads to the need of a feeding tube. It compromises your voice which means communicating is difficult. Breathing muscles are also affected, which leaves you replying on a ventilator to breath. All the symptoms oocur while your mind is unaffected. The average life expectancy is just 2-5 years from the onset of symptoms with 1/3 of people diagnosed dying with 1.5- 2 years.
There is no known cause of MND and there is no cure or effective treatment, its always fatal. There is a serious lack of awareness and more importantly funding. The Darby Rimmer Foundation wins to raise awareness of the disease whilst fundraising to support those effected and fund much needed research. There is a lot of research going on and the signs are promising for the treatments in the future.
Thank you, Archie and Richard O'Donnell.
