Story
Every 3 seconds, someone in the world dies from sepsis. Globally, 11 million people die from sepsis a year. In the UK 245,000 people are affected by sepsis. At least 48,000 of these people lose their life. This is more than breast, bowel, and prostate cancer combined.
Sepsis is the body’s life-threatening reaction to an infection. When sepsis strikes, the immune system overreacts and starts attacking not just the infection but everything around it. Any type of infection can lead to sepsis and it can appear out of no where.
Sepsis awareness is a major factor in why so many people don’t see the signs and symptoms of sepsis. Sepsis Research FEAT looks to raise awareness of sepsis by funding national awareness campaigns, introducing sepsis educational talks in schools and workplaces, and spreading the word on different sepsis cases and how they can affect people.
The research into sepsis is the most important thing as this will hopefully one day reduce sepsis deaths by creating a treatment for sepsis. £13 allows patient DNA sepsis samples to be collected. £26 allows the collection and storage of patient DNA sepsis samples. £56 allows the collection and storage of patient DNA sepsis samples along with genotype sequencing which could unlock new drugs and treatments for the future.
As apprentices at DB Cargo, we strongly believe sepsis awareness and research is important. One of the apprentices has lost someone close to them due to sepsis, therefore this charity is close to home. We want to run a marathon to raise money as we all know this will be a huge challenge for us all. We are training for it already, but we are no where near that 42.1km which we will be doing in 2024! We are excited and nervous for this challenge ahead and ask for as much support as possible.
