Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Sadly, just over a year ago we lost a very special person, Peter Brown (PB). He is sadly missed by his family, friends and work colleagues and always will be. We all remember Peter in our own different ways and have our memories and stories of him. Peter will always be remembered for his vibrant, friendly personality; his kindness, understanding and words of encouragement. His knowledge and practical skills of all things fire related are known by all - A true professional. However, Peter also struggled and suffered for many years with mental illness; specifically depression, something which is more common than most people realise. We would like to raise people's awareness of mental health as well as raising funds to help them to continue to provide the much needed help and support they offer.
A number of his friends have decided to organise a walk in memory of Peter starting at Peterlee Community Fire Station and finishing at the new Training Centre in Bowburn on the 12th September 2015. The exact route and times will be posted when finalised; but it will be an approximate distance of approximately 15 miles; however we decided in true Fire Service tradition that we will do it slightly differently ..... in full Fire Fighting kit with the addition of a Breathing Apparatus set weighing in at approx. 20kg ... Why? well because of PB's love of Breathing Apparatus and The Fire Brigade / Service in general.
All are welcome to either join in the whole of the walk or part of the walk (don't worry you'll not be expected to wear fire kit and BA !!) and help raise funds for the charities below and to remember Peter and perhaps share some of your many stories and happy memories.
The two charities which we are raising funds for are:
The Fire Fighters Charity
The Fire Fighters Charity support programmes include rehabilitation, recuperation, psychological & nursing across our 3 centres. We also offer local assistance. It costs over £8 million a year to meet the needs of our beneficiaries & with no regular government funding we are reliant on donations & fundraising.
Mind
Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. But hundreds of thousands of people are still struggling.
Every seven years a survey is done in England to measure the number of people who have different types of mental health problem each year. It was last published in 2009 and reported these figures:
Depression | 2.6 in 100 people |
Anxiety | 4.7 in 100 people |
Mixed anxiety and depression | 9.7 in 100 people |
Phobias | 2.6 in 100 people |
OCD | 1.3 in 100 people |
Panic disorder | 1.2 in 100 people |
Post traumatic stress disorder | 3.0 in 100 people |
Eating disorders | 1.6 in 100 people |
Some problems are asked about over a person’s lifetime, rather than each year:
Suicidal thoughts 17 in 100 people
We believe no-one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We’ll listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner.
